Structure: so …that

  • “So” is an adverb.
  •  used before an adjective or another adverb
  •  meaning: “very, to such a great degree”
  • SO + ADJECTIVE/ ADVERB
    • The chicken was so delicious.
    • Those pictures are so beautiful.
    • He’s done it so well.
    • The baby is moving so slowly.
  • SO + ADJECTIVE/ ADVERB + THAT + CLAUSE

    • So … that: show cause and effect.

    • James was so tired that he couldn’t finish the test on time.
    • (James was too tired to finish the test on time.)
    • Nina was so sleepy that she couldn’t concentrate on the lessons.
    • (Nina was too sleepy to concentrate on the lessons.)
    • The man ran so slowly that he didn’t win the race.
    • (The man ran too slowly to win the race.)
    • He speaks so loud that the baby can’t sleep.
    • (He speaks too loud for the baby to sleep.)
